(JTA) — Josh Mandel, a Republican, was elected for a second term as state treasurer in Ohio.

Mandel, who is Jewish and lives in suburban Cleveland, won the statewide race with 57 percent of the vote, defeating Democratic state Rep. Connie Pillich.

In June, Mandel purchased $47.8 million in Israel Bonds, the largest single government purchase of Israel Bonds in the United States.

The victory comes two years after the former Marine, who served in Iraq and remains in the reserves, failed in his bid to unseat Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown.

Mandel, 37,  was elected twice to the House of Representatives, in 2006 and 2008.
