The Opinion piece written by Rabbi Menachem Genack (“Why I Support Hillary Clinton for President” (Dec. 25) identified him as CEO of OU Kosher (as well as the rabbi of a shul in Englewood, N.J.) and noted that the rabbi’s views “do not represent those of the OU.”
That Rabbi Genack was identified by his professional title, albeit juxtaposed with the disclaimer that his stated views were not those of the OU, may have engendered confusion in the minds of some readers. I therefore write as the president of the Orthodox Union to state, clearly and unequivocally, that the views expressed were personal to Rabbi Genack and do not, in any way, by implication or otherwise, represent the views of the OU.
The Orthodox Union is a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) organization. The OU cannot, does not, and will not, endorse candidates for elected office. The OU’s mission in the political arena is to build relationships with leaders across the political spectrum and work with them to advance the values and interests of our community. We have always, and will continue, to do this on a nonpartisan basis. No personal statements by those professionally affiliated with the OU should be understood otherwise.
