JERUSALEM (JTA) — An Israeli army officer was injured in a stabbing attack in the West Bank and his Palestinian assailant was shot and killed.

The officer was injured in his hand in the attack Thursday afternoon near Nablus, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The assailant was identified by the Palestinian Maan news agency as Haitham Mahmoud Abd al-Jalil, 31, of a nearby Palestinian village.

According to the IDF, he first attacked a military vehicle patrolling the area, and when Israeli troops exited the vehicle to inspect the damage, he took out a knife and stabbed the officer.

Abd al-Jalil was the second Palestinian assailant shot and killed Thursday. In the morning, Israeli troops fired on a knife-wielding man who attempted to stab a soldier at a checkpoint north of Hebron, the IDF said.

A Palestinian man was shot and killed at the same junction on Tuesday as he attempted to stab a soldier manning the checkpoint at the Beit Anun junction.
