WASHINGTON (JTA) — Secretary of State John Kerry pledged the U.S. government will hold Iran to its promise to help find Robert Levinson.
Kerry made his remarks in a statement issued Wednesday marking the ninth anniversary since Levinson, who is Jewish, went missing from Iran’s Kish Island during what has since been revealed as a rogue CIA operation.
“The U.S. government in its entirety will continue all efforts to locate Bob and bring him home,” said the statement. “The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has committed to cooperating with the United States to determine the whereabouts of Mr. Levinson, and we are holding Iran to its promise.”
Levinson, 68, of Coral Springs, Florida, was not part of a prisoner exchange with Iran in January that was timed to launch the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal. Instead, the Obama administration said Iran had pledged to help track him.
U.S. officials believe Levinson, a private detective and former FBI agent, is no longer in Iran.
