JERUSALEM (JTA) — Two Israeli soldiers have been disciplined for burning a Palestinian flag at a West Bank checkpoint.
The soldier who set the flag ablaze near Nablus on Wednesday was sentenced to 28 days detention. His squad commander from the Kfir Brigade was relieved of his position and sentenced to 20 days in military prison.
The flag was burned in front of hundreds of Palestinians making their way through the checkpoint to jobs in Israel. Soldiers had found the flag in a car they were inspecting.
The Palestinian Authority filed an official complaint with Israeli authorities, the Palestinian Maan news agency reported.
In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces said a “preliminary investigation found that the incident was out of the ordinary and that the force acted improperly, and against the orders of their commanders.”
