CLEVELAND (JTA) — The Republican convention elected Donald Trump its nominee for president.
The 89 delegate votes that Trump, a developer and reality TV star, garnered in his home state of New York pushed him over the 1,237 needed to secure the nomination on Tuesday evening at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.
His son Donald Trump Jr. announced the delegates, launching cheers throughout the arena.
“Congratulations, Dad, we love you!” he said, surrounded by Trump’s other adult children, Eric, Tiffany and Ivanka, who is a convert to Orthodox Judaism.
Trump has been the presumptive nominee since early in May, when he won the Indiana primary.
Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, is set to be formally nominated in Philadelphia next week.
