The United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York formally launched its 1966 campaign at an inaugural dinner tonight in the Hotel Pierre, where 500 leading members of the Jewish community announced pledges that put the drive over the $10, 000, 000 mark.
Edward M. M. Warburg, on the occasion of his retirement after 25 years as chairman of the Joint Distribution Committee, and Governor Nelso A. Rockefeller, on the 20th anniversary of his establishment of New York UJA’s Non-Sectarian Community Committee, received awards for humanitarian leader ship.
Gov.Rockefeller made the presentation to Mr. Warburg of the Herbert H. Lehman Memorial Award, which is a medallion bearing a head of the late Governor and U. S. Senator, designed by sculptor Murray Hersh. The inscription to Mr. Warburg read: “In tribute to his life-long devotion to the highest principles of service to his fellow man, in the tradition so nobly exemplified by our late beloved Herbert H. Lehman. “
Gov.Rockefeller was presented with a gold plaque commemorating the twentieth anniversary of the creation of the Non-Sectarian Community Committee of UJA, with himself as its first chairman.
