Ten great former athletes from around the world have been elected to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
The announcement about the athletes – from the United States, Hungary, Israel and Canada – was made last week by the Hall of Fame, a sports organization founded in Los Angeles and headquartered at the Wingate Institute in Israel.
The following Americans were honored: Harry Harris, bantamweight boxer and 1901-02 world champion; Marty Hogan, racquetball champion in the 1970s and 1980s; Henry Laskau, racewalking recording holder, 1947-56; and Benny Lom, All- American football star at the University of California, Berkeley, 1927-29.
The following Hungarians were honored: Laszlo Fabian, Olympic gold medalist, canoeing, 1956; Tamas Gabor, 1964 Olympic champion, fencing; Anna Sipos, world table tennis champion, 1932-33; and Laszlo Szollas, world champion figure skater.
Tal Brody, of Israel, who led Maccabi Tel Aviv to the European Cup championship in 1977, was named. Football superstar Joe Krol of Canada, 1946-47, was also named.
In addition, the South Philadelphia Hebrew Association basketball team, which dominated the old American Basketball League in the 1930s and 1940s, was named.
