1,000 American Scholars Protest Polish “ghetto” Benches

A THOUSAND SCHOLARS OF 110 LEADING AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES WARNED THE POLISH GOVERNMENT TODAY THAT “GHETTO” BENCHES FOR JEWS WOULD TEND ISOLATE POLISH INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING FROM CONTACT WITH FREE EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS IN OTHER COUNTRIES.

A LETTER DEMANDING STEPS TO END SEGREGATION OF JEWS, SIGNED BY 994 EDUCATORS, WAS FORWARDED TO THE POLISH MINISTRY OF EDUCATION BY THE AMERICAN SECTION OF THE INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR ACADEMIC FREEDOM, TOGETHER WITH AN OPEN LETTER TO POLISH ACADEMIC LEADERS APPEALING TO THEM TO OPPOSE SEGREGATION.

OFFICERS OF THE AMERICAN SECTION OF THE LEAGUE, WHICH OBTAINED THE SIGNATURES, ARE DR. ALVIN JOHNSON, PRESIDENT; PROFESSOR ALBERT EINSTEIN, PROFESSOR JOHN DEWEY AND PROFESSOR WESLEY G. MITCHELL, VICE-PRESIDENTS, AND PROFESSOR HORACE M. KALLEN, SECRETARY.
