$100,000 Pledged to UJA by Jewish Fraternal and Benevolent Organizations

Pledges and checks totalling $100,000 for the war emergency campaign of the United Jewish Appeal were received today at the annual luncheon of the Council of Organizations of the UJA at Manhattan Center here, attended by 1,500 delegates representing several hundred Jewish fraternal and benevolent groups in this city, with a membership of more than 500,000. William Rosenwald, president of the National Refugee Service, welcomed the delegates.

Greetings from members of the United Nations were delivered by Arthur H. Tandy of His Majesty’s Council, representing the British Government; Silvan Strakacz, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland; Karel Hudec, Consul General of the Czechoslovak Republic; Dr. Joseph Ku, Deputy Consul General of the Chinese Consulate, and Oscar Gabrilowitsch, the Yugoslav consul.

Among the chief speakers were Louis Segal, General Secretary of the Jewish National Workers Alliance, and Herman Hoffman, Grandmaster of the Independent Order Brith Abraham. Greetings on behalf of the Jewish language newspapers were delivered by Arthur L. Malkenson, publisher of the Jewish Morning Journal; Alexander Kahn, manager of the Jewish Daily Forward, and Morris Weinberg, publisher of the Day. Judge Jonsh Goldstein of the Court of General Sessions is honorary chairman of the Council, and Max Ogust is executive chairman.
