The 100th anniversary of Dr. Ludwig L. Zamenhof, originator of Esperanto, was observed at a special commemorative meeting held this week-end at Freedom House here, attended by about 200 Esperantists.
Dr. Zamenhof, who published his first textbook on Esperanto in 1887, was a Jew, born in Bialystok, in 1859. Among the speakers at the commemorative session were Dr. Mario Pei, professor of Romance philology at Columbia University; and Claude Piro, a translator employed by the United Nations.
