The 10th anniversary of the reunification of Jerusalem will be observed at the annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly May 2 with the presentation of a new musical work, “Jerusalem–City of Vision and Prayer,” Announcement of the first major public performance was made by Rabbi Stanley Rabinowitz, of Washington, president of the association of Conservative rabbis.
Derived from a text originated as a lecture by Rabbi Avraham Holtz, professor of Modern Hebrew Literature at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and with music by Cantor Nathan Mendelson, hazzan emeritus of Congregation Shaar Hashamayim, Montreal, the hour-long cantata is an effort to capture the spirit of Jerusalem as a unified community. It is sung against the visual background of a series of slides of Jerusalem scenes, past and present.
The cantata will be rendered by the Ronim Chorus of Congregation Beth Sholom of Long Beach, New York, conducted by Cantor Solomon Mendelson, its hazzan, who with his brother, Cantor Jacob Ben Zion Mendelson, of Temple Gates of Prayer, Flushing, NY, will be soloists.
