Plans for the construction of a new, $3,500,000 temple at Short Hills, a suburb of Newark, were announced here today by Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, which was founded in 1848.
The new Temple has been designed by Marcel Breuer, the architect who designed the new UNESCO House in Paris as well as modern buildings for Hunter College and New York University. The main sanctuary will feature a series of 70-foot high concrete arches centering on a ceiling of 12 skylights symbolizing the 12 tribes of Israel. The Temple is being planned as a modern version of the Temple of Solomon, and will include a complex of buildings containing a school, chapel, and assembly structure.
