Almost $12,000,000 in Israel bond capital was raised in 1962 in the New York metropolitan area for the economic development of Israel, it was announced tonight by William Goldfine, campaign chairman of the Greater New York Committee for State of Israel Bonds. Mr. Goldfine made his announcement before a capacity audience of 18,000 Israel bond buyers at the second and final performance of the Chanukah Festival for Israel in Madison Square Garden.
Brigadier-General Shlomo Goren, Chief Chaplain of the Israel Defense Forces, who was the principal speaker at the Festival, brought the greetings of the people of Israel to the Jews of America. “Whatever we have accomplished in Israel has been achieved not only by ourselves but with your great and wholehearted support and help,” the told the audience.
“Through the great national project known as Israel bonds,” Rabbi Goren said, “we have been able to undertake a great and important task–making the Negev desert bloom. We have already laid the foundation of a new city called Arad, near the Dead Sea, With the help of people like you, I am convinced that tan years from today we will have a new Tel Aviv in the Negev.”
