A rising tide of opposition to the Kashruth Association’s plan for rabbinical supervision of poultry markets yesterday began to make itself felt while the Association, which is enforcing a religious ban against poultry not conforming to its regulations, announced that 130 markets have signed agreements to undergo rabbinical supervision and affix the Association’s leg-bands to poultry.
The board of directors of the Live Poultry Institute of Greater New York, comprising Bronx and Harlem wholesalers, yesterday reached an agreement with a group of insurgent members of the Kashruth Association at a conference at the home of Rabbi Raphael M. Barishansky, 762 Beck street.
In the meantime, the Northeastern States Agricultural Conference in session here was on record as opposing the leg-band form of supervision as a “racket.”
As a result of the uncertainty, a number of shochtim, especially those working in Lower East-Side markets, did not report for work yesterday morning. East Side poultry dealers, meeting yesterday afternoon at the Great Central Palace, complained bitterly that they could not procure poultry because of the indecision among the shochtim.
