A budget of $138,000 was adopted by the American Advisory Committee as its share of the general budget of the Hebrew University in Palestine. At the meeting of the Board of Governors of the University in London last June, a budget of $276,000 was adopted for the academic year 1928-29, an increase of $50,000 over the budget for last year.
At the meeting of the American Advisory Committee, at which Felix M. Warburg, chairman, presided, Mr. Harry Sacher of the Palestine Zionist Executive was present as a guest and reported informally on the progress of the University. Members of the Committee present at the meeting included Dr. Cyrus Adler, Dr. S. Benderly, David Bressler, F. Julius Fohs, Dr. David Kaliski, Dr. S. Lowenstein, Dr. Emanuel Libman, James Marshall, Leon Moisseiff, Samuel Rosensohn, Sol Rosenbloom, Bernard Semel, Dr. Roger Straus, Dr. Israel Strauss, Dr. I. S. Wachler.
The Committee announced that a special physicians’ post graduate course will be given under the auspices of the Hebrew University and the Hadassah Medical Organization by Dr. E. M. Bluestone Director of the Hadassah in Jerusalem. The course will be planued for two groups, general practitioners and specialists.
A preliminary announcement of the organization of the new Faculty of Humanities has also just been issued by the Judah L. Magnes, Chancellor of the University, in preparation for the opening of the fall semester. The Faculty will be composed of the Institute of Jewish Studies, the School of Oriental Studies, and the newly established courses in Philosophy, History and Letters. During 1928-29 instruction will be given in Talmudic Philology, Gaonica, Hebrew Jurisprudence, Modern Hebrew Literaaure, Palestine Jewish Sociology, Arabic Literature, Islamic History, Islamic Art, and Archaeology, Modern Philosophy and Theory of Knowledge, Hellenistic History, Greek Literature. Preparatory classes in Greek, Latin and Arabic will be organized.
The admission requirements for entrance to these courses will be a matriculation certificate or an equivalent diploma from a recognized secondary school. Further qualifications will be required for admission to particular courses, such as advanced Hebrew knowledge for Jewish Studies. Post-graduate research students are admitted to all departments of the University.
Permits to enter Palestine can be obtained through the University on condition that the application has been accepted as a regular student of the University. He must arrange for a guarantee by a recognized financial institution in Palestine in the amount of £180 to cover the responsibility for three years incurred on his behalf by the University, towards the Immigration authorities in Palestine, the Committee announced.
