143 Israel Teachers Now Teaching in Jewish Schools in U.S.

Over 60 of the 143 Israeli exchange teachers now in the United States serving in 72 Jewish schools of all types — Reform, Conservative and Orthodox as well as all-day schools and Yiddish schools — attended the annual conference for the exchange teachers held here under the sponsorship of the Department of Education and Culture of the Jewish Agency for Israel, it was reported today.

In the nine years since its inception, 942 Israeli teachers have participated in this exchange program sponsored by the Agency’s Department of Education and Culture in cooperation with the American Association for Jewish Education. The Israelis teach in the United States for periods from one to three years. Apart from the values in any cultural exchange program, this teachers’ exchange program has also helped meet the shortage in trained teaching personnel in the American-Jewish educational field.

The conference was addressed by the Israel Consul General in New York, Michael Arnon; Mrs. Rose L. Halprin, member of the executive of the Jewish Agency; and Dr. Samuel Blumenfield, director in the U. S. of the Agency’s Department of Education and Culture. The teachers attended an all day seminar addressed by American and Israeli experts on the subject: “The Place of the Israeli Teacher in the American Jewish School.”
