A group of 165 rabbis and yeshiva students, survivors of rabbinical seminaries in Poland, will arrive tomorrow at San Francisco from Shanghai where they were marooned during the war, it was announced here today by United Service for New Americans. They are being admitted to this country on teachers’, students’ and other temporary visas.
The S.S. Ernie Pyle, first immigrant ship to leave Germany this year, docked in New York today with 896 passengers, including 628 survivors of Nazi concentration camps and 92 orphaned refugee children. The Joint Distribution Committee made arrangements in Europe for 219 of the arrivals, helped the immigrants to file visa applications with American consulates, arranged passage and undertook or advanced ocean travel costs for those without American kin to help them. The immigrants entered this country under corporate affidavits issued by the United Service for New Americans, which guarantees support of the newcomers until they are able to care for themselves.
