Approximately 1,650 foreign Jewish refugees registered with the Italian-Jewish Aid Committee have been interned while some 1,350 are still at liberty.
Thirty per cent of the interned and 85 per cent of those still enjoying their freedom are women and children. Included in the latter group are 850 registered in Milan, 250 in Rome, 180 in Trieste and about 70 scattered in Genoa, Naples, Fiume, Florence, Turin, Verona and Modena.
Refugees who resided in the more important military zones, such as Genoa and Naples, were among the first interned. Until recently there were more than 400 refugees in Genoa. Now there are 17.
