Seventeen Black Panthers were arrested tonight after a wild demonstration that disrupted traffic in downtown Jerusalem. Club-wielding police charged the Panthers but no injuries were reported to either policemen or demonstrators. Among those apprehended were two Panther leaders, Saadia Marciano and Kochavi Shemesh. The Panthers demonstrated despite a recent Knesset directive barring demonstrations in main thoroughfares. However, police said they did not intervene until the Panthers left their assembly point at the town’s main intersection and began streaming down a heavily trafficked street.
