The Grodno District Court today sentenced two Endeks (Nationalists) to three years’ imprisonment each for the bombing last March 16 of the Jewish Health Society’s headquarters in Grodno. A third Endek was acquitted of the same charge.
The trial aroused great interest because the Nationalist Party, departing from its usual custom in such cases, failed to provide legal talent for one of the defendants, Alfons Panasiuk. Panasiuk, it appears, had written a letter to his mother from prison, voicing regrets at his former “blind, unjustified hatred” of the Jews. The letter so infuriated Nationalists that they refused to supply an attorney for his defense.
