The Refugee Committee here has rejected an application by the Jewish Community of the Island of Rhodes for admission of 200 to 300 Jewish families who were stripped of all their possessions before leaving Italian territory. The committee, in announcing its action today, explained that there were already 800 refugees in Tangier, 285 of whom were being supported by the Jewish Community.
Although no restrictions exist in the International Zone for refugees engaging in trade and commerce, the possibilities are strictly limited in view of the fact that the Tangier population is only 85,000, including 50,000 Arabs. Very few of the refugees here have been able to earn a livelihood, while the majority of those who are not receiving charity are living on their savings pending re-emigration overseas, for which there is little prospect.
The 800 Jewish refugees here include 30 German Jews who immigrated directly from Germany or from France, 20 Czechoslovakians, 75 Austrians directly from Austria or France, 220 Poles, mostly from Italy, 165 Oriental Jews from Rhodes, 150 Hungarians, mostly from Italy, and 140 Rumanians, Russians and others, mostly from Italy and France.
