Some 200 students held a noisy but generally orderly demonstration on New York University’s Washington Square campus in downtown Manhattan today demanding the reinstatement of John F. Hatchett, the controversial Negro teacher who was dismissed last week as director of NYU’s Afro-American Student Center. The demonstrators alleged that Mr. Hatchett had been unjustly accused of anti-Semitic bias and passed out leaflets defending him against such charges. But a general strike in support of Mr. Hatchett by the 42,000-member student body failed to materialize.
