The extent to which the Syrian government is anxious to permit Jewish immigration into Syria was disclosed here today when it was stated that no objections will be raised to the entry of 2,000 Jewish families into the country, provided they bring along with them a capital of $10,000 for each family.
The Syrian authorities, while anxious to attract Jewish capitalists, are not at all interested in permitting the entry of Jewish doctors, lawyers and other professionals, it was made clear today.
Doubt was expressed today by competent observers, whether Jewish capitalists will be interested in going to Syria if no Jewish workers are admitted.
ALIEN LABOR CURBED
Labor laws in Syria make it difficult for alien citizens to obtain employment. It is therefore a question whether any foreign Jew will undertake any enterprise in Syria if he is not assured of his right to employ Jews.
It was also pointed out today that Jews from abroad, if they possess a capital of $10,000, would prefer Palestine to Syria.
Syria’s exports to Palestine now average $5,000,000 a year, while its imports from Palestine total only one-fourth of this sum, it was disclosed today in connection with the Syria-Palestine trade negotiations started by the High Commissioner Wauchope of Palestine during his visit here last week.
