Professor Albert Einstein, world famous scientist and Nazi Germany’s most distinguished exile, will be the guest of honor this afternoon at a reception at the Hotel Commodore by the women’s division of the American Jewish Congress.
Two thousand women, representatives of leading organizations in all boroughs of New York, as well as delegations from neighboring cities, will attend the reception. More than 500 persons have been unable to secure reservations, it was announced.
Professor Einstein, who has associated himself with the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N. J., since his exile from Nazi Germany, has accepted the invitation extended by the women’s division of the American Jewish Congress as a token of his regard for the work of the American Jewish Congress in combatting Hitlerism and in protecting Jewish rights wherever threatened. He is the honorary president of the executive committee for a World Jewish Congress.
LAGUARDIA TO SPEAK
Professor Einstein will be officially welcomed to New York City by Mayor Fiorello H. LaGuardia, who will be among the speakers this afternoon. Other speakers will include Mrs. Carrie Chapman Catt, one of the most militant opponents of Hitlerism; Mrs. Stephen S. Wise, president of the women’s division, and Dr. Stephen S. Wise, honorary president of the American Jewish Congress. Mrs. Nathan D. Perlman, chairman of the committee on arrangements, will preside.
Among the guests of honor will be Mrs. Albert Einstein, Aldermanic President Bernard S. Deutsch, Mrs. Fiorello H. LaGuardia, Mrs. Rebekah Kohut, president of the International Federation of Women’s Organizations, and Miss Mary Dreier, secretary of the Women’s Trade Union League.
The proceeds of the reception will be used to support the work of the American Jewish Congress for the establishment of a central authoritative body for the discussion and solution of Jewish problems.
WILL BE BROADCAST
Two national networks and one local radio station will broadcast the proceedings. Station WABC and WEAF will broadcast Professor Einstein’s address over two national networks in a fifteen-minute broadcast which begins at 3:45 o’clock. Station WMCA will broadcast the affair from 3:15 to 4 o’clock.
A musical program will be presented by a group of distinguished artists, featuring Ruggiero Ricci, the youthful violin virtuoso.
In connection with the reception, the women’s division has published a testimonial volume, recording the activities of the American Jewish Congress. The frontispiece of the volume is an etching of Professor Einstein, specially posed for Samuel G. Cahan, well-known etcher.
The arrangements for the reception have been made by a committee headed by Mrs. Nathan D. Perlman, chairman; Mrs. Bernard S. Deutsch, treasurer; Mrs. Beatrice Block, secretary.
