Some 20,000 Israeli doctors, engineers and other professionals employed in government and public enterprises will start a general strike on September 5, their coordinating committee decided last night.
The strike will be in protest against the Government’s delay in acting on their demands for adjustment of their salaries to those of senior administrative officials in government and public service enterprises. The principle of parity between the two groups had been agreed upon. A few months ago, Supreme Court Justice Y. Sussman, acting as arbitrator, decided that the starting point for the demanded adjustments should be the situation as of March 31, 1964.
Since then, according to the coordinating committee, negotiations have dragged on in a joint committee with the Government, with no progress. The strike will affect high school and university teachers, scientists in government services, pharmacists, economists and other groups of degree-holding professionals employed by municipalities, public services and public institutions.
