The opening of a nationwide campaign to raise $2,000,000 for the construction in Israel of a statue of liberty, was announced here today by Senators Jacob K. Javits of New York, Philip A. Hart of Michigan, and Gale W. McGee of Wyoming, co-chairmen of a national sponsors committee for the project.
The statue, which is to be a gift to Israel from the American people, will stand on the slopes of Mount Carmel overlooking Haifa harbor, where hundreds of thousands of immigrants first arrived in the Jewish State. To be named “Statue Shalom,” the illuminated pillar will be erected on a site donated by the City of Haifa and will be dedicated on July 4, American Independence Day. Construction of the statue is expected to be completed in 1963.
