200th Anniversary of Charleston Jewish Community Marked by Historical Society

Lee M. Friedman of Boston was elected president of the American Jewish Historical Society for a third term last night at the concluding session here of the 48th annual meeting of the society.

The society marked the 200th anniversary this year of the founding of Congregation Beth Elohim and the Jewish community of Charleston, South Caroling; the centennial of the Utica, N.Y., Jewish community; and, the 50th anniversary of the National Conference of Jewish Social Welfare. In addition, abstracts of papers on various Jewish historical subjects were presented by 17 Jewish scholars.
