More than 231,000 Jewish children are now receiving a Jewish education in the United States, Mark Eisner, president of the American Association for Jewish Education, declared today at a press conference marking the start of “Jewish Education Month,” which began this week.
Of the total number of Jewish pupils, he explained, 120,000 attend Sunday School or other one-day-a-week schools, while the rest go to Jewish schools, Talmud Torahs, Yeshivahs, and other types of daily schools.
Eisner declared that the Association is intensifying its efforts to stimulate Jewish education. The percentage of Jews interested in Jewish instruction has grown in the past year, he said, noting that his organization serves schools of various Jewish groups in this country.
Other speakers at the conference were Bernard Semel, secretary of the association, who emphasized that this is a favorable time for spreading Jewish ideals through education, and Dr. Alexander Dushkin, who reviewed the past year’s accomplishments of the Jewish Education Committee of New York, of which he is vice president.
