In an interim report, the local bureau of the United Restitution Office today announced that 2,400 Jewish victims of Nazism have with its help obtained $3,600,000 in compensation and indemnification payments from Bavaria, almost all of it in the past six months.
The beneficiary are for the greatest part former concentration camp inmates who now reside in Israel, the United States and Great Britain. Currently the URO is handling 17,000 claims filed against the Bavarian state.
The URO is a non-profit organization which gives legal advice to applicants and aide them in filling out the complicated application forms, and then presses their claims. Its lawyers have fought a number of crucial test cases to a successful conclusion in the Bavarian counts. (The New York office of the United Restitution Office is located at 1674 Broadway.)
