Twenty-five thousand Jews have survived the German persecutions in Greece but they are in dire need, it was reported here today by Finance Minister Alexander Svolos.
Svolos, who recently arrived from Greece, where he was president of the Greek Liberation Committee, said five thousand of the survivors were hiding in the mountains, protected by the partisans. Many, including refugees from occupied Macedonia, joined the guerrillas.
Svolos, who came with five other leftwing leaders to participate in the new national unity government, said every trace of racialism would be wiped out in Greece after the liberation and all Greek Jews would be fully integrated into Greek national life. (There were 72,000 Jews in Greece before the war. The majority were deported to death camps in Poland or died of undernourishment and disease.)
