Polish official circles today reported that 25,000 Jews from the Warsaw ghetto are now interned in a concentration camp in Berensbotel, over Hanover. These are the survivors of the 40,000 Jews who were in the ghetto during the battle which preceded its liquidation by the German authorities.
The Belgian Government-in-Exile, quoting the underground Belgian newspaper “In Legion Noire,” today reported that sixty percent of a large group of Belgian Jews arrested last summer by the German occupation authorities have died either in detention camps, or while being deported.
The clandestine publication disclosed that the Jews were rounded up by the Nazis with the assistance of Flemish nationalists and Rexist storm troops. They were assembled at a detention center where they were stripped and forced to surrender all jewelry, money, dental plates containing gold or silver and many other valuables in their possession. Many were beaten by the guards. In apparent anticipation of post-war retribution, however, the guards forced the Jews to sign statements to the effect that they had not been mistreated prior to deportation. The underground paper says that some of the prisoners died in the Malines camp in Belgium, while others died en route to camps in Holland or Poland.
