A Rehovot magistrate today remanded 17 Arab youngsters and one Jewish youth to 15 days’ imprisonment on charges of participating in racial clashes in Rishon Lezion. In the riots, lasting two days earlier this week, one Jewish participant was sufficiently injured to require surgery. Six other Jewish youths, all under 17, were ordered remanded for five days each.
The situation in the township, meanwhile, eased, and Arabs who had fled because of the fighting began returning to their jobs. The injured Jewish youth was reported as still in serious condition after a second operation. The brawl began when some Arab youngsters reportedly insulted a Jewish girl and some Jewish youths came to her defense.
