A total of 65,000 pounds (approximately $260,000) is reported in the first list of contributions to the united British fund to aid the Jews of Germany. The list was made public today in connection with an appeal for support. Contributions of 10,000 pounds each were made by the Rothschilds, the banking firm of M. Samuel, the Bernhard Baron family and the Simon Marks family. Other contributions included a thousand pounds each from Dr. Chaim Weizmann, Claude Montefiore and Lord Melchett.
“The ruthless measures adopted by the German Government have left many thousands of German Jews without prospects of earning a livelihood and without hope for the future,” the appeal declares. “This fund aims to deal with the many aspects of this immense problem. The position changes daily and it is impossible to predict the form of assistance chiefly required. It is our belief that Palestine offers the best opportunities for a new life for those forced into exile and a substantial sum will be devoted to the settlement of suitable immigrants within the limits of the absorptive capacity of Palestine.” The appeal is signed by the committee’s presidency of five.
