Twenty-seven refugees who arrived from England on Monday on the British liner Cameronia sailed for the Dominican Republic today on the Porto Rican steamship Coamo to join the Sosua colonists. They include six married couples, of which three women expect babies in the next few weeks–the first to be born in Sosua–and two couples who will be married there–marking the first weddings at Sosua.
Meanwhile; James N. Rosenberg, president of the Dominican Republic Settlement Association, made public a letter from Dominican President Troncoso de la Concha acknowledging receipt of a photograph of the first group of refugees to pass through the United States en route to Sosua. “I shall keep this photograph as an historical record,” the President wrote. “At such times as these it is good for us, as for them, to see this modern Mayflower.”
