The American Friends of Tel Aviv University announced today they will seek to raise $2 million in the United States towards the construction of the Olympian Memorial Center for Physical Education at the University. The center will honor the 11 Israeli Olympic athletes slain Sept. 5 by Arab terrorists in Munich. An additional $2 million will be contributed by the Israeli government towards the $4 million project.
Details of the campaign were announced at a news conference at the Touchdown Club here by Milton Pollinger, a local builder who is chairman of the Washington chapter of the University’s American Friends, and Abe Pollin, the chapter’s co-chairman who is president of the Baltimore Bullets. They formally announced that the American campaign will open with a dinner on Nov. 29 at the Washington Hilton Hotel.
The center will provide “urgently needed” physical recreational facilities for the University’s 15,000 students, the news conference was informed. The center is part of the plan for developing the University. Other facilities will include the School for Jewish Studies, the library for exact and engineering sciences, the central administration, a faculty club and a student building.
