The sum of $500,000 was contributed here yesterday to the 1955 United Jewish Appeal by 300 Connecticut business industrial and professional leaders as they opened a statewide campaign to help the UJA raise part of its $100,000,000 nationwide goal.
Jack D. Weiler of New York, a national chairman of the UJA, reported that more than 80,000 Jews in tension-ridden North Africa have petitioned agencies of the United Jewish Appeal for immediate movement to Israel. Mr. Weiler emphasized that “this represents an increase of 50,000 since the beginning of 1955 and is a sharp indicator of mounting emergencies facing both the UJA and its overseas agencies.”
