Thousands of political prisoners in Germany have been tortured, murdered and illegally put to death during the past year, according to figures just issued by the Comite Internationale, of which Andrew Gide is president. Statistics were received in the United States by the National Committee to Aid the Victims of German Fascism, with headquarters at 870 Broadway.
Since January, 1933, when Hitler assumed power in Germany, 3,000 anti-Fascists were murdered there. Of the sixty-seven sentenced to be executed, twenty-six were beheaded. The number has since increased.
TORTURED AND KILLED
According to the figures, about 119,682 were crippled permanently or otherwise wounded. Political prisoners in concentration camps, storm troop barracks, workhouses and political prisons, are known to number 174,000.
“Figures compiled for the month from October to November 1, 1933, show 59,183 were tortured in concentration camps and 396 tortured to death in the prisons, although they were not officially sentenced to death,” says the report.
The National Committee to Aid the Victims of German Fascism, made up of prominent Americans, has headquarters at 870 Broadway. More than a score of branches have been established in other cities. The committee helps finance homes for political orphans of Saarbruecken and the Maison Lafitte, Paris. Professor William L. Nunn, of New York University, is treasurer of the committee.
