Because critical needs face 250,000 Jewish displaced persons in Europe as a result of the liquidation of all UNRRA operations as of tomorrow, more than 3,000 Jewish communities throughout the country will continue their local drives through the summer months in order to raise maximum funds for the UJA, Henry Morgenthau, Jr., general chairman, announced yesterday.
“The end of UNRRA operations without provision for an adequate and functioning substitute intergovernmental organization to meet the relief and rehabilitation needs of the homeless refugees of Europe represents a great challenge to the generosity of the American people,” Mr. Morgenthau said. He pointed out that the International Refugee Organization, which is supposed to succeed UNRRA, does not have the resources and personnel in any way comparable to those formerly available to UNRRA.
The national office of the UJA made public today a letter from Archbishop R.J. Cushing of Boston, addressed to Milton Kahn, chairman of the UJA’s New England region, in which the Catholic prelate endorses the UJA, declaring that “we Catholics cannot possibly isolate ourselves from the suffering people of Israel.” Citing the plight of the Jews of Europe, the Archbishop added: “Our people wish to identify themselves with you in the effort to meet our mutual problem.”
