The great interest of the Palestinian population in reading matter of all kinds is demonstrated by the annual report of the department of education which shows that 409 books and pamphlets were published in Palestine during 1929. Of this number 349 were in Hebrew, 19 in Arabic, 15 in Yiddish, 14 in English, 9 in Italian, 5 in Armenian, 2 in German and 2 in French. Sixty newspapers were published during the year, 43 of them in Hebrew.
