Arab-Jewish warfare flared with renewed fury today, bringing death to at least 35 Arabs and seven Jews in Haifa and other parts of Palestine and raising the July toll to an estimated 115 Arabs and 57 Jews killed and nearly 300 wounded.
Terror-torn Haifa was again the chief battleground. A terrific bomb explosion in a Kingsway market place killed 35 Arabs and wounded between 50 and 60 others. The bombing occurred in the same place where on July 6 a similar blast resulted in the death of 23 Arabs and five Jews and touched off country-wide disorders which continued throughout the month with scarcely a respite.
The Haifa blast was immediately followed by citywide Arab attacks on Jews and Jewish property in which four Jews were killed, one, Moshe Mizrachi, by shooting and the others by stoning — Dov Fleshel, 50; Reuben Yabur, 50, and Dov Ben-Moshe, 25 — And ten others were wounded. Arab moss put Jewish-owned property to the torch, looting shops and homes.
Daytime curfew was immediately imposed in the mixed quarters of Haifa and heavily armed British soldiers and marines cleared the streets with fixed bayonets. Although the city was tense, with troops patrolling all danger points, the situation was considered to be in hand. Arab circles charged the bombing was an act of reprisal by Zionist-Revisionists.
