Three and one-half million trees have been planted in Palestine since 1920, while the Jewish National Fund has 60,000 dunams of land which require an additional 8,500,000 trees, it was stated today by Joseph Weitz, JNF forestry chief, addressing a Herzl memorial meeting at the settlement of Ben Shemen, where the first Herzl Forest was planted.
Reviewing the stress which Herzl, the 40th anniversary of whose death is to be marked this month, laid upon afforestation of Palestine, Weitz said that 2,500,000 dunams require afforestation. The JNF, he stated, planned to incorporate a large-scale afforestation scheme in its post-war employment project for demobilized soldiers, war workers and new immigrants.
