Resumption of anti-Jewish agitation in the East End by Fascists in connection with the international crisis has resulted in the tightening of police supervision, following a decision by the Home Office authorities to take drastic action to put down such disorders.
One result of this decision was seen today when magistrates, acting undoubtedly under instructions from higher authorities, meted out the fullest punishment to four Fascists for shouting “down with the Jews!” and “Perish Judah!” outside the Limehouse Town Hall yesterday during a speech by Major Clement Attlee, Laborite Leader, on the Czechoslovakian crisis.
One of those arrested yesterday, a gasfitter named Henry Quinnel, was sentenced under the Public Order Act to two months’ hard Labor, and also was fined L5, with an alternative of 28 days’ imprisonment, for obstructing police. A second Fascist, Eric Ralph Midlane, a motor mechanic, was fined L5 for using insulting language.
