More than 40 Jews were injured, many seriously, when gangs of hooligans attacked the Jewish quarter of Kovel. The trouble began yesterday when a number of Jews were injured in a quarrel with Polish swimmers. Revolvers, knives, and sticks were used by the hooligans. The Jews of the town are panic-stricken. They have deserted the streets, barred the doors of their houses and closed their shops. The windows in many Jewish houses and shops have been smashed.
A delegation of Jews headed by the president of the Jewish community and the rabbis asked the protection of the municipal authorities. The district police chief informed the delegation, however, that he did not have enough police. Following this the deputation left for Lutsk to see the district commissioner and ask for his intervention.
Among those injured are Hirsch Basker, suffering from gun wounds; Naphtali Satz, stabbed in the head and abdomen; Abraham Beiner, both legs broken; Eliser Beiner, reported to be dying from knife wounds; Chaim Plat, Gold Witedsky, M. Shereshefsky, seriously wounded by revolver shots; and S. Reichtal, G. Lowenthal, C. Reder, David Brunnstein, M. Gips, M. Fuchs and N. Saltz.
