Four hundred orthodox Jews marched from Jerusalem to the suburb of Romema as a protest against sixty Jews who are employed in public works there and work on the Sabbath because their government contract calls for it.
The police used clubs on the throng in an effort to disperse it.
Rabbi Abram Blau, leader of the Agudath Israel, was arrested for offering resistance to the police, but was later released on bail.
Following the demonstration a delegation representing the Palestine Jewish National Council visited the District Commissioner asking that the Jews be released from Sabbath labor.
The District Commissioner explained that this is difficult for technical reasons. Moreover, he said, if the Jews are unwilling to work on Saturday they will be released from their contracts and Egyptian labor will be substituted.
