The Central Bureau of Statistics reported today that 42,000 persons arrived in Israel during 1971 as immigrants or potential settlers compared to 36,800 in 1970. The category of potential immigrants was defined as persons from Western countries who arrived on tourist or temporary residents visas and have not yet changed their status. The number of per- sons in that category in 1971 was 15,800 according to the statistics bureau. There were 26,200 permanent settlers during the past year, nearly half of them from the Soviet Union. According to reports last month, more than 12,000 Jewish emigres arrived in Israel from the USSR during 1971. The statistics bureau reported that 12,100 persons immigrated to Israel during the last quarter of 1971 compared to 9,700 during the corresponding period of 1970.
