A group of 447 Israel-bound Jewish refugees from Shanghai boarded a sealed train today for a five-day trip to New York where they will be transshipped to an Israel-bound vessel. The group is part of a total of ?28 Shanghai DP’s who arrived here yesterday aboard the S.S. General Gordon. The United Service for New Americans helped disembark 137 of the passengers who will be resettled in the United States. Forty-four others will be resettled in Europe.
Upon landing here last night, the Israel-bound group sent a message of congratulations to President Dr. Chaim Weizmann of Israel on his election to the presidency of the Jewish state. Officials of the local Jewish Welfare Fund and Weat Coast Israeli consul-general Reuven Dafni boarded the vessel to greet the refugees. The U.S.N.A. announced that it has arranged for a physician, nurse and three social workers to accompany the 447 Israel-bound immigrants on the rail trip to New York. The agency is also providing the Israeli group with fresh fruit, toilet articles, magazines, newspapers and other amenities for their journey.
