Award of five fellowships of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation to Latin American scholars was announced yesterday by Henry Allen Moe, secretary, on behalf of the trustees. The recipients of the awards will come to the United States to work on problems of importance to their native countries in collaboration with scholars here.
Endowed by the former U. S. Senator and Mrs. Simon Guggenheim, of New York, the fellowships are given without distinction of race, color or creed. The stipend is about $2,000 a year, plus travel allowances.
The committee’s selections this year include Dr. Atilie Macchiaveilo Varas, of Chile; Professor Alfredo Barrera Vasquez, of Mexico; Dr. Alfonso Dampf, Mexico; Dr. Luis Hugo Howell Rivero, of Cuba; and Dr. Ramon Enrique Gaviola, of Argentina.
