Five cents out of every dollar which New Yorkers will spend in restaurants or cafeterias today will be set aside to provide food and rehabilitative aid for the destitute Jews of Germany and Eastern Europe, it was announced yesterday by Abraham Krasne, chairman of the food division and allied trades of the United Jewish Appeal. The entire restaurant and cafeteria industry of Greater New York has agreed to donate five per cent of its “take” or gross receipts today to the Appeal. Placards announcing “This restaurant will contribute 5% of its gross receipts” will appear in hundreds of windows throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx.
A “fifty-dollar dinner” of this industry will be held next Wednesday evening, at the Hotel Commodore. This dinner will bring together representatives of all the food trades of New York City— manufacturers, dealers, importers, as well as restaurateurs. The guest of honor and principal speaker will be Prof. Albert Einstein.
6 GROUPS ARE SPONSORS
Both the dinner and “restaurant day” are being sponsored by the six leading restaurant associations of New York, the Metropolitan Restaurant and Cafeteria Owners Association, Society of Restaurateurs, Quality Restaurateurs Association, and the Brooklyn Restaurant Owners Association. These associations represent 2,000 restaurants in Greater New York, whose management includes many nationalities and non-Jewish as well as Jewish restaurateurs.
Including both the membership of these associations, and the restaurants not included in them, it has been estimated that Greater New York has 28,000 eating places, where 28,000,000 meals are served daily. Based on an estimated expenditure of $7,000,000 per day for food by New Yorkers and transient visitors to the city, it is expected that “restaurant day” will be productive of generous revenue for the suffering Jews of Europe.
The city has been divided into zones for “restaurant day.” The Zone Chairmen include Leo Cohen, Samuel Agran, Herman Morgan, Joseph Siegel, Nat Yellin, Harry Freedman, George Cohan, Clyde Millet, Nat Steinberg, and Samuel Blumenfeld.
The Food Division, one of the largest divisions of the New York United Jewish Appeal, is headed by Mr. Krasne, who is chairman, and Dr. G. A. Lowenstein, of the Willow Cafeterias, Harold M. Hirsh of Macy’s, and Meyer Cohen of the Cortlandt Cafeteria, are co-chair-men. Sylvan L. Stix is treasurer of the division, Abraham F. Wechsler, associate treasurer and Samuel Goldstein, secretary.
