50 Nobel Prize Winners Sign Appeal on Behalf of Dr. Mikhail Stern

French philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir released here yesterday an appeal on behalf of Dr. Mikhail Stern signed by 50 Nobel Prize winners from 13 countries, the appeal retraced Dr. Stern’s career and stressed that the award for his efforts on behalf of humanity "is to be slowly murdered in a forced labor camp." The Nobel Prize winners stressed. "Each of us can one day become the victim the machinations of a state. It is our duty to raise our voice to demand the liberation of Dr. Mikhail Stern."

In a letter to the French daily, "Le Monde." Sartre and de Beauvoir recalled that Dr. Stern was imprisoned for eight years solely because he refused to give in to KGB demands and oppose the departure of his two sons from the Soviet Union last year. The Soviet Union charged Dr. Stern with taking bribes and malpractice.

In addition to Sartre and de Beauvoir. others who signed the appeal included: Samuel Becket, Andre Lwoff. Heinrich Boll. Arthur Koestler, Kenneth Arrow. Gunnar Myrdal. Harold Urey and Richard Hofstadter.
